Fred Hawkes

Frederick (Fred) John HAWKES

A Luton legend, Fred was born in the town in 1881 and soon made his name as a schoolboy star and was naturally snapped up by the Town and made his debut in March 1900 in a Football League game at home to Loughborough as a forward.
The Town left the Football League at the end of that season but in the following campaign Fred reverted to the half-back line and over the next 20 years became an almost ever present fixture in the side.
With good anticipation, a firm tackle and excellent distribution Fred remained remarkably injury free in a long career and by the time he played his last game for the club in May 1920 he had racked up 625 competitive appearances.
A hat manufacturer by trade, Fred passed away in the town in 1952.
