John Lamb

John William LAMB

Born in Worksop in 1893, John was playing for Bolsover Colliery as a centre-forward when he was picked up by Sheffield Wednesday in 1912 who converted him to a half-back.
After making only a handful of first-team appearances for the Owls he joined the Footballers Battalion during the Great War and was injured at the Somme but seemed to recover and guested for several clubs before returning to Sheffield once peace was declared.
The Town stepped in to sign him in the summer of 1920 on the promise of regular football and the ‘rough and ready’ centre or wing-half played 24 games in 1920-21 but it became increasingly apparent that the war-time injury was affecting his performances.
His contract was not renewed after one season and he went off to play for Matlock Town.
