John STEPHENSON

Born in Croxdale near Durham in 1896, John played local football for Horden before he was snapped up by the Town in the summer of 1921.
Essentially signed as a reserve full-back, John could not replace the consistent George Lennon on a regular basis but was kept on as cover for a second season when he fared little better.
Said to be tough and tenacious, John left the Town in January 1923 for Kettering before signing on with Durham City in the summer of 1924.
The air in the north seemed to suit him as he played 130 League games for Durham in four seasons before a good spell at Rochdale and finishing his career being ever-present for Ashington in 1928-29 their last season in the Football League.
