Julius GREGORY

Born in Romiley, near Stockport in 1881, Julius signed for Bury in 1903 and subsequently turned out for Manchester City.
As he felt his first team chances were limited there he engineered a move to Brighton who, as a Southern League side, did not have to pay a fee. A first team regular at the Goldstone Ground for two seasons he earned a reputation as a bit of a bruiser from his position of left-back but that did not deter the Town who signed him in 1908 when he became available.
Julius made 28 appearances for the Town in 1908-09 but by the end of the season he had lost his place and decided to retire to join the army where he served all over the world.
Julius died in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 while serving with the Royal Fusiliers.
