Ted Bassett

Edward (Ted) John BASSETT

Born in Deptford in 1889, Ted was a tiny, but fast and tricky, right winger who turned out for a variety of clubs before hitting the jackpot in 1913 when signing for Notts County and winning a medal as the Magpies won promotion from Division Two in his first season.
At the end of the Great War he signed for Watford before coming to Luton in September 1921 for a fee of £200 and got into trouble with the Football League for demanding, in writing, a share of the fee!
His stay at Luton was only of one season duration as the younger Sid Hoar was regarded as the better long-term prospect and he went to Dartford in 1922 although he played football at a reasonable level until his early 50s.
Settling in Watford, he ran a snooker hall there at one time, and passed away in the town in 1970.
